Notice Sent for End of April; C.W.U. Wants Negotiations First

This afternoon, the CWU made good on the threat by stevedores, firing off a letter to the Minister of Labor through the Labor Commissioner Ivan Williams and copied to the receivership of the Port of Belize.  It’s a notice of pending strike action against the Port by the stevedores.  According to CWU President Dale Trujeque, since the law has made stevedoring an essential service, a twenty-one day notice has been issued and the men plan to shut down the Port on the twenty-seventh of April because of the delay by the receivership of the Port to commit to a commencement date for negotiations.

“One of the things we inherited is pending negotiations with the Port of Belize for a collective bargaining agreement with the stevedores. So when we took office, I wrote the Port once, I wrote the Port twice. The second time we had threatened a go-slow if they didn’t have a meeting with us. We had a meeting last week Monday with a small group of us and we brought up the issue of resuming negotiations. They were very tentative and noncommittal and we couldn’t get a date. So we said, so when can you give us a date? Mister Vasquez said give him a week. Well it’s been a week and two days already; five o’clock will make a week and two days. The stevedores are not happy; you have been a witness to the stevedores being really unhappy. Unhappy is not even the correct word; the stevedores are furious. They will take their fury out of anybody that stands in their way.”

The letter puts a tentative date for negotiations to commence on April twelfth.
