More Airlines, More Hotel Rooms – Tourism on the Up
There’s been a lot tonight on the tourism industry…Saturday’s Southwest Airlines’ touchdown at the Philip Goldson International Airport will not be the last arrival of an airline in Belize for the year. Apart from Southwest’s own introduction of a Fort Lauderdale to Belize flight in June, two other well-known airlines will launch new flights, one out of Canada for the first time. Tourism Minister Manuel Heredia says the market is more open than ever. But it is now for the operators on the ground to respond, especially in the area of hotel rooms for all the arriving tourists.
Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation
“I think you have heard that [there is a] high possibility that by November we might have JetBlue over here; and next season, Westjet, speaking to them – Calgary will almost be a must; that they will be also flying direct from Calgary to Belize, so that is a plus for the country. Again, what that means is that airlines cannot just be coming more and more; we have to build more rooms also, otherwise if you bring a lot of people and don’t have [somewhere] to put them, we will be in trouble again. Then you will see the numbers stagnant; some people will not have a good experience. And so you need to build more better rooms, and additional rooms also.”
