Survivor in Fatal Accident Speaks to News Five

There was a fatal traffic accident just before midnight on Tuesday that claimed the life of twenty-one year old Kendra Mejia and injuring her brother, Hector Mejia and her seventeen year old sister-in-law Lizzemy Gutierrez. Sometime around eleven thirty that night, Police were called out to miles seventy and seventy-one near the Calla Creek Junction on the George Price highway where they observed a van with extensive damage. It is reported that Mejia lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over several times.  All three were taken for medical treatment, but Mejia later succumbed to her injuries at the San Ignacio Community Hospital.  Today, we spoke with Gutierrez, who was transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

“Me, my sister-in-law and my bra-lee mi deh ina di car and we mi di head to Cayo fi go get my bwai. And then afterwards, wah car mi di come and then afterwards like the light mi too strong fi her eyes so she lose control and she started to go side to side. From there, we gone down the grass, down the hill and ih just happen. When we check, my sister-in-law dead, my bralee get hurt and I get hurt too.”

“What kind of injuries did you and your brother-in-law sustain?”

“He has like an injury on his face.”

 

Duane Moody

“And you? What kind of injuries did you get?”

 

On the Phone: Lizzemy Gutierrez

“Well I broke my hip and my foot…well my two ankles.”

 

Duane Moody

“What are the doctors saying?”

 

On the Phone: Lizzemy Gutierrez

“Well they noh tell me nothing needed. They just went and give me a checkup to see what is broken, but they really didn’t say if I will be able to walk or anything. But it is really bad and I will have to get surgery for it.”

 

Hector Mejia has since been treated and released from the K.H.M.H.
