Fiery Accident on Placencia Road Leaves 2 Dead
At the crack of dawn this morning, a horrible accident occurred on the Placencia Road in the south. A speeding pick-up truck veered off the road and crashed into a lamppost as it heading from Placencia to Santa Cruz. The vehicle burst into flames and its occupants were burnt to death. Initial reports indicated that four persons were travelling in the truck, but police confirm that two charred bodies were found inside. Up until news time, a post mortem is being conducted and the identities of the persons will not be revealed at this time. News Isani Cayetano reports from the scene of the accident.
The charred and mangled remains of a Ford F-150 pickup truck that came to rest on the shoulder of the Placencia Road, after careening across the lonely stretch, conceals the badly burnt bodies of several persons. Sometime before six o’clock this morning, the vehicle, presumably driven at high speed, was traveling along the highway when it crashed into a lamppost. The violent collision sent the pickup bowling unto the other side of the road before bursting into flames. Trapped inside the wreckage were two occupants, including the driver of the vehicle.
Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody, Regional Commander, Southern Police Formation
“Police responded to the report and on arrival they saw an F-150 pickup engulfed in flames. After the fire had been extinguished or burned out we observed that we had several bodies inside and we tracked down the vehicle to a person in Placencia, but I don’t have the identity of the persons inside of the vehicle at this present moment.”
The extensively damaged vehicle remains under the careful watch of a team of officers dispatched to the location of the accident to safeguard the integrity of the scene. Senior Superintendent Ralph Moody surmises the cause of the tragic mishap.
“What happened is that it appeared that the driver lost control [of the vehicle] and ran into a lamppost and caused damage to the lamppost and as well caused damage to the high tension wire just behind me and that is what we are seeing at this present moment.”
“The issue of road traffic safety on this stretch, has there been any move by police within this jurisdiction to either patrol the Placencia Road?”
Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody
“Well not only the Placencia Road but we are doing [patrols] on the Hummingbird and the Southern highways as well, but due to the fact that there [are limited] resources that’s something we cannot do on a day-to-day basis. But we do make an extra effort to patrol the highway and the Placencia Road.”
“Now I understand that you’re waiting for the forensic pathologist to come and do an investigation into the scene of the crime as well. At this point can you determine the number of bodies that are in the vehicle?”
Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody
“I don’t want to mislead anyone, so we are waiting on the pathologist to assist us in determining the amount of persons inside of the vehicle at this present moment.”
