Mr. Belize Rigo Vellos Goes Back to Arnold Classic
Five-time Mister Belize, Rigo Vellos left the country today for Ohio, U.S.A. Vellos and two other Belizean bodybuilders will be competing at the Arnold Classic this Friday. The professional bodybuilding competition is one of the segments of a weekend-long event of different categories of fitness competitions. This is not Vellos’ first time to the competition – he was there some three years ago and placed ninth in his category. He took some time off to prepare for this appearance. News Five caught up with him before he departed the Jewel.
Rigo Vellos, Bodybuilder
“My first time was in 2014. Back then I came in ninth place and hopefully this time I am going for something bigger and greater.”
“Now talk to us about the category you are competing in and how did you prepare for that?”
“I am competing in the heavyweight category which is up to one hundred kilos. The preparation was a bit different because I had to get bigger; hence that is the reason why I chose to rest for three years to go back to The Arnold so that I can grow some more. So, the preparation was more intensive; the dieting; everything was more intensive and I had to keep focus to reach my target.”
“Now, in terms of competing out there with veteran athletes; how is that for you – you have been in this business for a very long time; you are one of the best, if not the best, in Belize?”
“Well, actually, I have the mentality that every competition where I compete it is a plus; an experience; a stepping stone. And competing against the best in the world always makes you better. It takes up your game and so therefore when I come back to Belize I can share my experience and learn whatever tricks and share with my Belizean colleagues here that compete.”
“Have you set a target for yourself say – I want to be in the top five; any predictions?”
“Well, the truth is that this is just the second time that we have Belizeans going to the Arnold Classic. Thank God I was in the first group – one of the first Belizeans in 2014. My target is that I just want to do better than the first time I went. It is not always about winning the competition, but reaching your goals and my goal is reaching up to a hundred kilos and looking good on a stage. If I do better than ninth place that is okay with me. But, if I would have the choice, top five.”
“So, any final words you would like to leave with Belize on what they can expect from Rigo at the Arnold Classic?”
“All I can is that I prepared very well for this competition. I made sure that I dotted all my I’s and crossed all my T’s. So, Belize look forward on having a guy – your five times Mister Belize – on a stage looking damn good, representing Belize very well. I would like to give thanks to Smart, for always sponsoring me. They have been having my back for the last couple years since winning Mr Belize. I want to thank the Corozal Community; My Spartan Family; Reifenbark Family and all the Belizeans around the whole country.”
