Olympic President Defends Accusations
The new board of the committee include: Hilberto Martinez who was reelected as President and Owen Meighan as Vice President. Meanwhile, Arturo Vasquez was voted in as Treasurer with Allan Sharp and Giovanni Alamilla as Secretary and Assistant Secretary, respectively. Also joining the board as members are Julian Murillo, Herman Pastor Junior and Deon Sutherland. But President Martinez also addressed concerns over the immediate past treasurer, Giovanni Alamilla, who was convicted in the U.S. for a crime years ago.
Hilberto Martinez, President, Olympic Committee
“I wasn’t aware of that until I saw it in the newspaper some months before the Olympic Games. And because of the concerns, it was discussed both with the Pan American Games Association and the International Olympic Committee and I discussed it with Mister Alamilla who was the treasurer at the time, and he said, yeah as a young guy he made a mistake and did X. And their recommendation to me was well there are certain things—you are forgiven for certain things [and some] you are not. I mean he was forgiven, he spent his time. But Mister Alamilla has been a real work horse in the Olympic Association. He is a person that I could call any time of the day and night and I asked the Olympic Committee to give me until this annual general meeting so that he can present his financials so that everything is in order and this is what he did. Everything in finances for the Olympic Committee was in order. And if it wasn’t in order, I would have had to submit financials to the International Olympic Committee and if they feel that there are some irregularities, they would send in their own auditors.”
