Immigration Minister Godwin Hulse Takes Responsibility But Says He Was Not Alone

It has been a while since we’ve spoken about matters coming out of the Special Senate Select Committee inquiry with Minister of Immigration Godwin Hulse. First there was Ruth Meighan’s testimony that hundreds of documents were obtained without the proper documentation – suggesting massive fraud. And there was Teresita Castellanos’ testimony last week about the entrenched culture of corruption – so where is the Minister Hulse in all of this? Today we caught up with him at an event in Spanish Lookout. He spoke on the happenings that surrounded the processing of the documents.  He acknowledged that he takes ultimate responsibility. We take a look at a part of that interview:

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Immigration

“As Minister of Immigration, when I actually signed, I held back a lot of files and did all sort of personal investigation. That is not for the Minister to do; that is for the officers up the road. When that file comes to me, signed by the Director, signed by the Head of the Department. When I do a cursory look, sometimes there are twenty thirty forty files. Sometimes you hope that, God, everything is in order. There were also people who go out to ask questions where people were living – those people were in the department. They are also responsible and I would hope that the investigation would bring out all the names of those and not just focusing on which Minister mi give which permit and who mi call what – run the gambit from the top to the bottom. Because if there is a ring, I will tell you the honest truth, I would hope that every damn one goes to jail who was involved in this. And we confiscate the passport and nationality of everyone who got. You know so far that we have confiscated two legally; we’ve clipped some that came in and I keep doing this and people say well you can’t tek the Chinese because they will be stateless – I don’t really give a damn yuh know. You cannot come into my country through fraudulent means and hope to stay.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, but some of these things happened under your watch – really and truly?”

Godwin Hulse

“Yes some of it did and I have to take responsibility as the ultimate. But that is what I am saying – hoping that the investigation will highlight and pinpoint those persons who did the fraud coming up because if it were up to me deh nuh mi wah be no fraud, but there mi wah be two or three a year.”

In Tuesday’s newscast we will have much more from Minister of Immigration, particularly as it relates to Castellano’s bombshell in last week’s senate select inquiry.
