Exasperated Mayor Says Cinderella Plaza Traffic Lights Were a Bad Idea

If you are a driver who uses the Cinderella Plaza area, you may just want to pay attention to avoid an accident waiting to happen.  Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley was taken to task today about those traffic lights that are not functioning, specifically at the heavily trafficked intersection.  The Mayor wasn’t too pleased with the line of questioning from the media and he has made it no secret that he is not a fan of traffic lights – as a matter of fact, today he called them a stupid idea.   Mayor Bradley didn’t hold back when reporters asked him about those lights. Here is that exchange.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“Man, I have said this before, stop investing in stop lights. That is a stupid idea.”

Reporter

“Why?”

“Because build a roundabout. I know the problems with maintenance in Belize City. I can’t fix them. I am telling you that. So, you, Orson, will talk to the next Mayor on another traffic light. Stop spending money on stupid things. I would build a roundabout because the roundabout means – and you can see the investments made in roundabouts in Belize City. We have put in the Coney Drive roundabout; the Mahogany Street roundabout. They have actually replaced the street lights there, so that nobody is asking questions about Coney Drive and I think it’s Vernon Street where it intersects with Central American Boulevard. I think it’s four roundabouts that the city or the central government has put in key areas in Belize City because we keep the have questions about stop lights. And I don’t know what the specific problem is. I have raised it with our people and they keep telling me that a part needs to be ordered from this one and that one and that one. If we know there is a problem, let’s not create the problem again.  I would be the first to tell you and to admit and to confess that City Council and Government on a whole is woefully inadequate when it comes to maintenance of equipment. So, that we build that in with relation to the design. With regards to the stop light, I can’t answer when the stop light will be fixed because I don’t know. But I can say that from a strategic point of view, stop lights have never been a good fit for Belize City.”

“So, are you working on a plan to get a roundabout there?”

Darrell Bradley

“No.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, it is going to remain that way?”

Darrell Bradley

“Yes.”

Au contraire, Mr. Mayor. A traffic light beats a round about any day, especially the ill-conceived one you have at Mahagony street and Central American Boulevard which is too widely constructed for bigger vehicles to maneuver around and no one respects each other and yields. Have you ever driven around there early mornings, lunch or evening time? I guarantee you that you haven’t . What you need to do is take some of that money and send some worthy students right to Chetumal, which you emulate so much and have them take a three month course in electrical and maintenance of those lights. This government has too many quick fix schemes and don’t think of the long term effects . I wonder if this is the way to cover up the hustle. Inquiry minds would like to know.

Cinderella Plaza intersection is too narrow for a roundabout.

It’s also a hazard for pedestrians.

What they need to do there is put 4 stop signs so that traffic stops from all directions when reaching that intersection and drivers simply have to follow normal rules of courtesy. Who reaches the intersection first should go first. And if they make it a right turn only intersection that could also help prevent accidents and make it safer for pedestrians.
