La Inmaculada Credit Union Challenges Former General Manager in Court

Former General Manager of the La Inmaculada Credit Union in Orange Walk has filed a lawsuit against the Governor of the Central Bank of Belize for her wrongful termination after twenty-seven years of service with the credit union. Back in July of 2015, the credit union cut ties with Yolanda Gomez, after she was placed on administrative leave three months earlier. According to the Central Bank of Belize and the Financial External Auditor, an investigation suggested that Gomez did not comply with proper banking procedures and that she made questionable decisions during her tenure as GM. Today, the attorney for Gomez, Eamon Courtenay says the court has directed the parties to settle out of court.

“The case is about the former general manager, Misses Yolanda Gomez, who has brought a claim against the credit union for wrongfully dismissing her. The credit union defends the case saying that they did not wrongfully dismissed her and we have also sued the registrar of credit unions, which is the Governor of the Central Bank, because the credit union act specifically sets out a procedure that is to be adopted where a complaint is made against a general manager or employees and therefore the case is about that. So far we have completed the evidence of Misses Gomez; we are about to start the evidence of the credit union and the Central Bank governor, but the judge has suggested to us that we try to settle it. So that is what we are going to do.”
