Is the Government Serious About Change?

Mark Lizarraga

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Belize Business Bureau have proposed a raft of ideas to help fix Belize’s economy, including emphasizing economic growth, reducing leakages and holes in tax collection, and righting the Government ship.  But despite Government’s noises about change, are they really serious?  We asked Senator Mark Lizarraga for his view of the results of the consultation.

Mark Lizarraga, Senator, Business Community

“The conversations were very frank and very open, and we are grateful that we had the opportunity to share with the FinSec and the Minister [of State]. And I think that they are aware that Belize – and they even mentioned it in their presentation – that Belize needs to be competitive, especially because we know commodity prices have been falling worldwide; we don’t dictate the prices for sugar, citrus, bananas and things like that – it’s the world market. We know that we stand to get some competition from Cuba in tourism, so we have to be very careful when we talk about raising taxes, which taxes we are going to be raising, because we do not want to do anything which will further slowdown the economy in our country. So the conversation was very frank and open and I’m hoping that they would have listened to us and taken our recommendations seriously. The Chamber did give specific examples and specific areas that Government could look at and we hope that they take those into consideration; serious, serious consideration.”

Today, the Government’s team met with members of the trade unions and civil society and we will have the results of that later on in the newscast. For now there are no additional plans for consultations in the time between now and when the Government actually presents the Budget, around the middle of March as is traditional.
