Social Security: Pay More to Get More?

Chandra Cansino

In January, the Social Security Board announced that they would be going on a country-wide public consultation to discuss increase in benefits; for those making contributions, it means that those will increase. The reasoning behind this proposed increase is that when those who earn more than three hundred and twenty dollars weekly retire, they will not get a pension that is in line with what they had been earning. They hope to speak with workers and employers to see if they are willing to make increased contributions and to get higher benefits. We spoke with Chandra Cansino of the S.S.B. today for an update on how those public consultations are going so far.

Chandra Cansino, General Manager, Policy and Programs, S.S.B.

“The response has been excellent. The participation, we would still like to see more people attend the consultations but it is still very early in the stage of consultations and so we are still being asked to give different groups, individual groups, the same presentations we have been doing. We will probably continue doing that for a few more weeks and then we would have to formulate a very comprehensive report to hand to the C.E.O. and to the Board and then we would of course move with the process forward.”

“And the S.S.B. isn’t only targeting communities, but also groups, N.G.O.s, political parties; talk to us about that angle?”

Chandra Cansino

“Okay. Well, the first target group was everybody and so we advertised for the general public to attend if they so desired. And so now, we will perhaps start to zero in on the business community – the representative groups, because remember not all workers and not all employees are members of representative groups and so we have to take all of that into consideration. Now, it will be a little bit easier to target the representative groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Belize Business Bureau, the Unions, to have the conversation on a more individual basis. And of course, still available for anyone that has any individual concerns.”

That’s ok! Leave my 2 cents the way it is. I’ll put that other 2 cents in my pension. That I can claim in a BIGGER LUMP SUM at the end of my remaining twenty five years of service to my employer…God willing. You already got 20 years of my hard earn dollars and if it was not for having kids I would not have gotten one cent until I’m 65 years old and that is IF I even make it that far! TIMES HARD LEAVE MY MONEY ALONE…I BARELY GOT ENOUGH FOR MYSELF AND MY PICKNEY!
