Birding Now a Specialization for Tour Guides

Vladimir Rodriguez

According to Lizama, Belize is prime and ready to cater to the birding tourism market. The pilot training will see the Belize Tourism Board partner with the Audubon to continue programs for the tour guides. There were a total of twenty-one participants of which two are women. But according to tour guide Vladimir Rodriguez, the advance birding program allows for veteran and amateur tour guides to improve their craft.

“This training was the first of its kind in Belize; it was he advance bird training course which basically brought the birding and the guiding into one and allowed those of us, like myself who have been in the business of guiding for years, to be able to focus on birds a little bit deeper. So the knowledge that we got from this course was more in depth. But it also allowed those who are beginner birders to have an opportunity to advance to a higher level. The traveler to countries like Belize are interested in nature. Yes they would like to know about the plants, they want to know about the archeology, but birding is one of those activities or birds are one of those animals that you would more likely to see wherever you go; day or night. So it just makes sense that as a guide that you venture into birding at whatever level because people are always asking about birds. There are those birders who are beginners and they are just content or happy with just seeing a bird once every couple of minutes. And then you have the other level, which is the experts or the listers, we call them, and they would come with a list of birds that they want to see so you have to go out and look for that. So depending on what the client is asking for then that is what you go and look for.”
