In Belize City, Mark Jones Murdered by Ambush

Mark Jones

There was another murder, this time in Belize City where Mark Jones, was shot to death in his own yard. After eight o’clock on Thursday night, Jones was returning to his home on Iguana Street Extension, accompanied by his girlfriend, when he was ambushed.  While Jones’ family believes it may be related to another shooting in the neighborhood days earlier, police cannot ascertain the motive.  One person and the firearm, believed to have been used in the commission of the crime, are in police hands. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Another Belize City family has been visited by tragedy, following word of a deadly shooting in the vicinity of Iguana Street Extension on Thursday night.  Mark Jones, an employee of Skills Training Center, was ambushed by someone who waylaid him in a dark corner of this property sometime after eight o’clock.  When the twenty-nine-year-old returned home he was met with a hail of bullets.

“A little after nine, police responded to a scene on Iguana Street Extension where they saw the motionless body of Mark Jones who had a gunshot wound somewhere around the left arm and exited to the left back.  Initial investigation revealed that Mark Jones was walking in his yard when a lone gunman came out from behind his house and opened fire at him.  We have since conducted searches in that area and one of our specialized units has come up with what we believe to be the weapon used in last night’s murder.  We also have a person detained that we believe could shed some light into this latest murder in Belize City.”

According to Jones’ sister, who requested not to appear on camera, she received the ominous phone call after nine o’clock.

“I got a phone call that my brother came home with his girlfriend and she rode in the yard ahead of him.  He came behind walking and apparently the person was waiting in the dark behind the house and fired shots at him before she could have said somebody is there or anything.  That’s when the person shot him two times and he tried to run away and fell right down and that’s what I basically got to understand that the person was described as a clear skinned person.  The person that did the shooting ran out of the yard through the next neighbor’s yard and went on his business.”

But why would a hardworking young man be rubbed out in such a cruel and violent fashion?  It’s a question that remains to be answered.  At present Belize City police are unable to ascertain a motive.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“At this stage we cannot comment on that but we know that this person that we have detained should give investigators enough information that we believe that we can establish a motive soon enough, in the not-too-far future.”

Jones’ grieving sister believes that her sibling may have been killed as a result of a previous incident which resulted in a nearby residence coming under gunfire last weekend.

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“So far I get to understand that one of the neighbor’s house that got shot up like a couple days ago in last week; I’m not too sure when the incident happened.  They said it was him that did it and it was not because at the time he had just come in from his family’s wake with his same girlfriend.  So I don’t know how they could say that because when everybody else came out after the shooting, he came out in his towel.  Who knows, you know.  But I know definitely he was not involved in that.”

Mark Jones was returning from a wake for his slain cousin Jaheem Mahler when that incident happened.  Ironically, both relatives have been executed in the same neighborhood. What is apparent is that there is an ongoing row among residents of the area.

Voice of: Sister of Deceased

“Another young man that lives on Antelope Street Extension does always blame him for everything that happens to him.  Everything, that they even got them down into a meeting and he admitted afterwards that it was not my little brother that did him anything.  So I don’t know what else rumor is out there but whatever rumor is out there it’s not that way.”

Speculation aside, investigators at the Belize Police Department are treating the recent incidents on a case by case basis, careful not to make any foregone conclusions that they are indeed related.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“It has to be treated as an isolated incident; one, the time that that incident occurred and then this murder last night.  Even though it is in this same area it didn’t occur immediately thereafter so then we have to treat both incidents separately. On Tuesday of this week we had a neighborhood watch meeting in that area where Officer Commanding Eastern Division South, along with about forty residents of that area came together and they formed a neighborhood watch committee.  We have already been on the ground trying to put certain things in place.  We are not going to relate one murder that occurred on Raccoon Street Extension to one that occurred on Iguana Street Extension.  We cannot do that.  We have to treat each situation differently, establish motive and thereafter we can make our evaluation and [then] say whether or not these are related.”
