Pickstock Rep Talks about Benefits of Re-Registration

The decision by the Elections and Boundaries Commission to embark on countrywide re-registration and redistricting exercises after municipal elections are held in 2018 has raised the ire of the People’s United Party.  On Tuesday, the P.U.P. issued a firm release calling for those activities to be conducted no later than July first, in accordance with the stipulations of the Representation of the People’s Act.  The exercises are long overdue and the commission is seeking a one-year extension, much to the chagrin of the Opposition which believes that the decision is a deliberate act of political convenience.  The updating of the existing voters list will see most, if not all, of the thirty-one constituencies being reshaped and grow to at least forty.  Pickstock is presently below the threshold of registered voters needed for that constituency and, according to Area Representative Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington; re-registration should see an increase in the number of voters.

“Based on the information that we have, there is the suggestion that the Pickstock Division may not be at the average when it comes to the amount of voters that you need to have.  I think the average voter for each constituency would range in the amount of about three thousand, nine hundred votes for each constituency for it to be more or less equal.  I think that’s my recollection of the figures.  We are now at three thousand, five hundred so we may have to go up another four hundred.  We’ll have to get about four hundred more voters so that, because I think all of the other constituencies at the end of the exercise will have about that number.  So we may expect an increase in the size of the constituency.”

“In terms of the redistricting process, would this see an expansion of the Pickstock Division more into the Lake Independence area?  As it is, the boundary is at the corner of Oleander Street, correct?  Would this exercise see Pickstock going more into what is presently Lake Independence?”

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

“Unfortunately, I can’t answer that question because I have no hand in how it is being done.  There’s a particular group of people, a commission, I think, that has charge of that and I really can’t say what is their thinking.”
