Was Lords’ Bank House Fire Deliberately Set?

A home was completely destroyed by fire before midday today. The persons who lived at the home weren’t there at the time of the fire. While Police and Fire Officials have not classified the cause of the fire – best information to us is that it may have been intentionally set – a report that the owners also believe may be the case. News Five’s Andrea Polanco was in Lord’s Bank today and she spoke with the owners of the home:

What you’re seeing is what’s left of a wooden home – fire fighters are at work trying to put out the last few flames left from the blaze.  Warped zinc and charred wood are what remain from the two bedroom structure – it was completely destroyed in minutes after a fire started after eleven this morning here in the Hollywood area of Lord’s Bank. Fire officials and police were on site conducting their investigation to determine what caused the fire that destroyed this fifty-thousand dollar property. Three persons lived at the house – including Jamal Reid, the owner – along with his spouse and a relative.

Voice of: Jamal Reid, Co-owner

“As far as I know, I lose a lotta thing in my home. I had almost everything a house should have – I lost all my clothes, I lost all my belongings. Everything. I was just about to also do some more renovations on the home. Up to now, we are not we are not sure if it was an exact arson.”

Andrea Polanco

“What can you tell me about the value? How much was the house worth? How much were the appliances worth?”

Voice of: Jamal Reid

“Actually, as far as we estimated, the appliances of the house cost about eighteen thousand or almost nineteen thousand dollars for all the appliances we had in the home. The total value of the house, we do not have the exact figure but we could say between twenty to thirty thousand dollars because it was between me and my mom and we all put money, so I am not exactly sure of the amount we actually spent.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you lived at this house?”

Voice of: Jamal Reid

“Yes. Me and my spouse lived at the house, along with one of my relative who was staying with me for over two years now and we were also just trying to have the house for ourselves, so we were informing him that he needs to vacate the home, right? Which was something we did yesterday and for some reason the house today got burned down.”

But Reid’s family believes it was indeed an act of arson – and they say that the arsonist may be a relative. The reason behind it? The man was living in the home up to the time of the fire – but he was served with an eviction notice on Sunday. They say he didn’t particularly take the eviction notice well when Radiance Reid informed him that he had to vacate the home in two weeks’ time.

Andrea Polanco

“So, you don’t know the exact cause of the fire yet, but is it your suspicion that it was intentionally set?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid, Co-owner

“Well, ih look dah way. Ih look dah way ‘cause from last year November I told my nephew that he has to leave the house. I don’t want him to live there anymore because the place was getting small for him, his girlfriend, my son and his girlfriend. So after that he ask me to build downstairs and I told him no. I give him a written letter – the lady at the Raccoon Station told me to give him a written letter – a two weeks’ notice.”

Andrea Polanco

“When did you give him that notice?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“I went up there yesterday about 1 o’clock, after 1, I went up there. I rapped on the door and he opened it and I gave him the letter. He asked me what was the letter and I told him. He opened it and read it.”

Andrea Polanco

“Was he threatening or anything?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“Well, when he read the letter he was upset.  The last word he said was house…house; that was the last word he said.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he was at the house last night and up to this morning when the fire?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“He was there. He was there because he do carving when the cruise ship come in and today was not a working day for them; so he was there.”

Andrea Polanco

“Have you spoken with him?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“No. I haven’t spoken to him. The last time I saw him was when I gave him the letter yesterday morning.”

Andrea Polanco

“Has he called you guys since the house burnt down?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“No. He hasn’t called me.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you know if perhaps he cleared out his belongings before he left?”

Voice of: Radiance Reid

“When I went there yesterday morning, he said, ‘Auntie you could see there is not anything here in the room for me.’”

Jamal Reid says that the fire also took out the tools he used to make his living – as well as property belonging to his clients. He says he needs the public’s assistance to start rebuild.

Voice of: Jamal Reid

“I am actually an entrepreneur so I work for myself. I do computer repairs and technician stuff. I lost all my computer repairing tools and stuff. So, I really handicap in terms of making back an income off what I was doing. I lost all my tools. Everything. The only clothes I have is the one I came with to the city when I came down, you know. So, I can definitely use some type of assistance in that area. I have nothing – zero – to go from.  I had a lot of things in there  because I worked with computers and things for people that I lost that I now have to pay back for – not really sure how but as I said, I have to work again and would be upset with me for that.  Everybody was just sad. We are trying to figure exactly what happened. And when we saw the pictures on the phone, I was really destroyed because it was everything I ever worked for, you know. It is like everyone has a house and everything you put in there is just gone all of a sudden. So, I don’t know. I just feel very sad and disappointed in what happened.”
