Shooting Incidents in North, Southside of Belize City

There were two separate shootings in the City over this weekend. We start first with the shooting incident where thirty-five-year-old Deon Bennett of Mayflower Street was shot multiple times. Sometime around seven-thirty on Sunday morning, Bennett was riding his bike on University Drive when a SUV approached him from the opposite direction. Bennett told police that a man sitting in the back passenger seat of the vehicle fired several shots at him. Bennett sustained injuries to left hand, right upper arm, back of neck, upper back, and left side of back. He was treated and released from the K.H.M.H.  Police say that the vehicle has been located and impounded pending investigation. One person is detained and Police are looking for another. The second shooting in the city happened around twelve thirty in the afternoon on Sunday. Thirty one year old Francis Petillo of Set Site area was grazed to the abdomen when a gunman opened fire on him. Petillo was walking on Western Avenue heading towards Mahogany Street Extension the shooting happened. He was treated and released from the hospital. He spoke with News Five today about what happened on Sunday.

“I mi gwein by thevegetable spot go buy something fi mi sista and a gunman approach mi and chase mi with a gun and ah mi haffi drop the thing and he shot me two time inna mi belly.”

“This gunman – dah somebody weh you know? Somebody you familiar with?”

“I nuh really – ah nuh know he from nowhere ma’am.”

“You mi ever get threatened before? You mi have a target – so to speak – on your back?”

“No, ma’am. I neva get threated before.”

“So, you have no idea why you were shot?”

“No idea, ma’am.”

“Now, Francis, just clarify for us, you are not involved in any sort of gang activity; any criminal activity?”

“No ma’am. I just recently come outta jail and I behave myself from then, ma’am.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“Now, perhaps you nuh believe this dah some sort of retaliation for whatever you went to jail for?”

 

Voice of: Francis Petillo

“I neva do nothing else, only a chain I mi gone dah jail fah, ma’am.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“So you nuh feel like dah because ah dah chain deh…?”

“No, ma’am.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“So, since you got out of jail, no other attempts have been made on your life?”

 

Voice of: Francis Petillo

“No other attempts, ma’am.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“Are the Police saying anything to you? Do they know who this gunman is?”

“No. They just say deh wah get back to me, ma’am.”

 

Reporter

“So, as you say you mi di walk and this bally just come up to you – was he on his bike or neva had no mask or anything?”

“Neva had no mask. He just pull pahn me and chase me with ih gun.”

“Did you see what kinda gun he had?”

“He had a nine millimeter.”

“No, I nuh recognize ih face.”
