Toledo remains safe; Belize District less so

Allen Whylie

Residents and visitors of Punta Gorda Town and Toledo District can take comfort that the municipality is the safest of all six districts, as far as shootings are concerned.  While there were five such incidents in 2015, that number has since reduced to two.  As we mentioned earlier, Belize District recorded the highest incidents of gun violence.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“There were a total of two hundred and thirty-five shooting incidents recorded countrywide for 2016, as compared to two hundred and twenty during the same period in 2015, showing an increase of fifteen incidents or six point eight percent.  A breakdown by districts records that the Belize District showed the highest incidents with one hundred and sixty cases recorded in 2016, as compared to one hundred and forty-five cases in 2015, reflecting an increase of fifteen incidents or ten point three percent.  [This was] followed by the Cayo District where the second highest was recorded with thirty-three shooting incidents in 2016, as compared to forty-four cases in 2015, reflecting a decrease of eleven incidents or twenty-five percent in 2016.  The district with the lowest shooting incidents was Toledo with three shooting incidents in 2016, as compared to five in 2015.”
