N.G.O.s Called On to Unite for Sustainable Human Development
Despite the individual objectives of the various N.G.O.s, the idea, says Salas, is for members of the community to unite for a common cause which is sustainable human development.
Osmany Salas, Senator Elect
“When we say that the work is just beginning it means that we have to get our organizational structures in place, the way we communicate with each other; whatever strategic direction we must forge because we represent diverse interests all geared at helping to improve Belize’s development. Sustainable human development is what brings us all together. But it is within that that we cover various areas. So we need to work together to ensure as much as we can that we have a shared direction.”
“Can you assure us that when you do ascend to the upper house that you will treat all governance issues with objectivity and that decisions will be based on what you think are the best principles?”
“There’s no other way. There’s no other way. From the time I’ve known myself I’ve aimed and worked hard at being an objective, fair and balanced person. So I don’t see it happening any other way.”
Earlier today, media relations officer Froyla Tzalam, of the Thirteenth Senator Steering Committee, informed that a letter would be delivered to the Governor General apprising him of the outcome of the election. Following the elections, a number of organizations have sent messages of congratulations including the People’s United Party, which says in a release that it is now the Government’s responsibility to accept that nomination and complete the process of swearing-in the N.G.O.’s choice. The P.U.P. says it is confident that Salas is able to discharge his duties as a Senator with integrity and objectivity.
