Dengue Down in 2016; Women are Majority Affected by Zika in District

Another key set of numbers released for the Belize District are the numbers for the vector borne diseases. The Environmental Health Unit at Central Health Region continues to monitor the cases of these diseases – malaria, dengue, and Zika. Spraying and fogging have been ongoing in areas mostly affected by Dengue and Zika. Classic dengue numbers are down by almost half – in 2015 there were sixty six confirmed cases and up to November 2016 that number was down to thirty eight. According to the BHIS, mostly women are being affected by Zika in the Belize District. Doctor Zuniga tells us more:

Javier Zuniga

Dr. Javier Zuniga, Regional Manager, Central Health Region

“What we’ve seen with the vector borne diseases, in 2016 we had a decrease in the number of cases of dengue. Now, what we’ve presented are the diagnosed – the positively confirmed cases of dengue. As it relates to 2015, there has been a drop in the number of cases. What happened in 2015, we had an increase in spraying and this increase of spraying are directly related to the Zika virus infection. Now, you will see that we also have twenty-nine positive cases of Zika. And what occurred is that Zika is new to our population so we expected to have high number of Zika cases. And these are only confirmed cases, so if we look at suspected cases the number will be much higher, yeah.”
