The Jaguars Renewed: National Team Calls Up 23 for Copa Centroamericana

A new national team has been selected to represent Belize in the 2017 UNCAF Copa Centro Americana Games scheduled to begin on January thirteenth through to January twenty-second.  The team is made up some familiar faces, including striker Deon McCaulay, midfielders Ian Gaynair and goalkeepers Woodrow West and Shane Orio. The Copa Centro Americana tournament takes place at Estadio Romero Fernandez in Panama. According to Public Relations Officer of the Football Federation of Belize, John Palacio, the twenty-three players were chosen from a list of Belizean football athletes whose names had been submitted to the international football federations.

“Belize is among six Central American that will be participating in the Copa Centroamerica held by UNCAF.”

“This is not the first time that Belize is participating. Talk to us about how that selection was made. Is it solely on the coaching staff? I know we had an A team before that actually did wonders for the country.”

“In terms of the selection of the squad, what happened is that there is a list of football players that those names go to CONCACAF, UNCAF and they go to FIFA. From that list, the federation will do a call up of about thirty. The more people we have in camp then the more expensive it is so we actually try to get the best players in. Now this time around, we had a list out of about thirty, but we have much more than that and the reason for that is because we want to provide the best team to represent the country in these tournaments. The way forward in terms of how you go around picking the national team; it must be done by the coaching staff, reason being because the coaching staff is actually the ones who know the players on a one-on-one basis know how they play rather than the federation just selecting a squad.”

The new head coach was hired just over a month ago. Richard Orlowski, a Polish national living in the U.S. has work with many European teams as well as soccer teams in the U.S.  He along with assistant coach Charlie Slusher has been working with the team for some time now preparing them for the regional tournament. Even before departing for Panama, the team will participate in local matches to assist in their training.
