Robert Gillett Shot Dead on North Front Street

Robert Gillett

Prior to the murder of Randolph Johnson this afternoon, twenty-eight-year-old Robert Gillett was executed on North Front Street around midday on Monday. Police have not ruled out that it may be connected to another of the homicides over the weekend.  As many as fifteen shots were fired at the former inmate who was released from prison merely three months ago. His family was waiting to celebrate the start of the New Year, but Gillett did not make it. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

A broad daylight drive-by shooting around midday on Monday was the second murder for the New Year. Twenty-eight year old Robert Gillett was walking in front of Belize Farm Center on North Front Street when a vehicle drove up from behind and a passenger opened fire on him. Residents in the area say up to fifteen shots were fired at Gillett, who died on the spot.

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“Sometime around twelve midday, police responded to shots fired on North Front Street. Upon arrival, Robert Gillett, twenty-eight years, was observed lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. He was rushed to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations so far have revealed that Gillett was walking on North Front Street from the direction of Mapp Street when a car pulled up and shots were fired from the car, fatally wounding him.”

According to his cousin Kera Garbutt, Gillett was recently released from prison back in October 2016 after serving an eight year sentence for robbery in the Ladyville area. They expected him on Monday as he would always visit with the family on Perez Road, but he never showed up. They would receive a call some time after that Gillett was murdered.

“Eight years ago, he got incarcerated for something he did or what he didn’t do, but he was in prison for that and he got released in October. Since then, he changed his life. He came around us on Sundays so we can have family times together cause at the end of the day family is very important. He was here with us for the Christmas, all of us hanging out, having fun, bonding, showing each other love.  We expected him yesterday when we got the sad news that he was brutally gunned down. It’s hard for all of us, still cannot believe it. It is just crazy the way how it just happened so fast. He was supposed to come and hang out with everybody and it just never happened.”

But was Gillett killed in retaliation for another murder on south side over the weekend?

ACP Dezerie Phillips

“Police have launched an investigation into the matter; we have two persons detained so far and a motive has not been established as yet.”

Reporter

“I had asked your colleague who made an indication that this gentleman’s murder may be connected to Mister Sutherland’s. Can you share any information that police have which may lead to such a conclusion?”

ACP Dezerie Phillips

“It may be, but I cannot share any information that can directly say with certainty that it is linked.”

According to the family, Gillett was hit a whopping eleven times to all parts of the body. Regardless of his past, Gillett’s loved ones say that his life was callously taken.

Voice of: Kera Garbutt

“To be honest we can’t really say but eleven times, that’s cold…that’s really cold for someone so sweet and loving. You know we all do wrong in our lives and at the end of the day, people do change. But then fi make a person take a gun and just gun him down eleven times without mercy, without love is crazy.”

“What will you remember the most about him?”

“His smile. He always had this big bright smile and laugh. Very quite person, fun-filled, energetic, always willing to help; always come around…if you need him he is always there.”
