Grenade Recovered from Near Cumberbatch Field by G.S.U.

The discovery of a live M26 fragmentation hand grenade this morning, by personnel attached to the Gang Suppression Unit, continues to draw attention to an exceptionally violent and bloody New Year’s weekend in the Old Capital. The lethal explosive device was recovered from an area near the Cumberbatch Field at the intersections of Fabers and Caesar Ridge roads at around nine o’clock this morning.  It is not clear how long the hand-thrown bomb had been placed at the location, which is sandwiched by houses on either side of the field, and who may have left it there.  But did the team of GSU officers simply happen upon the grenade, or were they acting on intelligence that the projectile had been planted there earlier?  And why wasn’t Eastern Division South Commander ACP Chester Williams not informed of the find, since it occurred within his jurisdiction?  That’s what we asked earlier after the top cop initially admitted to not having any knowledge of the discovery.

ACP Chester Williams, Commander, Eastern Division South

“I have just been notified by the Acting Commander of GSU that sometime around nine a.m. this morning, they discovered a live grenade in the Yarborough area.  That grenade has been taken into custody by the B.D.F. and they will be the one to dispose of it.”

Reporter

“Was anyone found in the area?”

ACP Chester Williams

“From my understanding, no.”

Reporter

“Is the grenade, is it capable of detonating?”

ACP Chester Williams

“I said a live grenade…”

Reporter

“Can you paint a picture of the potential danger, I mean it’s live and there are residents in the area?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Well I am not a grenade expert and I think it depends on the types of grenades.  Different grenades have different capabilities.  So I cannot tell you exactly what would have been the possible effect of that grenade should it explode.”

Reporter

“Do you have any intelligence information as to where it might have originated from?”

ACP Chester Williams

“No I don’t.”

Reporter

“Or what markings it has?”

ACP Chester Williams

“No.  As soon as I get a picture of it I’ll be sending it to the media.  I’ll be getting a picture of it very shortly and I will be forwarding it to you.”

Isani Cayetano

“Not to create any unnecessary or undue tension within the department but since this discovery was made within your jurisdiction and the timeliness or the lack thereof of when you were informed of it.  Does this speak to some kind of communication breakdown or an autonomy among certain members of the police department?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Well, you know the GSU do not really operate under the command of us the Eastern Division commanders.  They have their OC and yes, from time to time, whenever anything occurs where they are concerned they would normally brief us and I have spoken to Mr. Caliz and he had intended to brief me which he eventually did.  Today’s a very busy day for all of us and I am sure that he just caught up with his work hence the reason the late brief but the briefing still did in fact come.”

The grenade has been handed over to the Belize Defense Force for disposal.  No arrests have been made in the wake of its discovery.
