Colin Sutherland was Belize’s First Murder Victim in 2017

Colin Sutherland

Twenty-two-year-old Colin Sutherland was shot and killed as he walked on Youth For the Future Drive on New Year’s Day. A man got out of a vehicle and fired several shots and killed Sutherland. Police say that they are looking for a possible connection with another murder of Robert Gillett who was killed one day later in the city. Sutherland wasn’t known to the police, although his brothers have criminal backgrounds. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

These blood stains on the Youth for the Future Drive mark where twenty two year old Colin Sutherland lost his life on Sunday night.  Around six-thirty that night, Sutherland was walking here in front of the gas station when he was shot and killed. ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“Sutherland, along with two others were walking on Youth for the Future Drive towards Vernon Street when they passed a car that was parked on the side of the street from which a male person alighted with a firearm and pursued Colin and eventually caught up with him and fired shots which eventually led to the demise of Sutherland.”

Sutherland’s family declined interview, but stressed that he wasn’t involved in any criminal undertaking and while he had relatives known to the police he wasn’t among them – a point that the Police also confirmed to us. Police say that they are investigating whether Sutherland’s murder is connected to the other murders in the City.

ACP Chester Williams

“From what we are gathering is that the murder of Sutherland may be connected to the one that Ms Phillips will speak to you about very shortly. As I had asked your colleague, we had indications that this gentleman’s murder may be connect to Mister Sutherland’s murder. Can you share any information which police have that may lead to such a conclusion?”

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“It may be, but I cannot share any information that can directly say that it is linked.”

“Mister Sutherland, is he somebody the Police have encountered in the past before, sir; or is he a law abiding citizen?”

ACP Chester Williams

“When will you people understand that I don’t answer those questions where the character of a deceased person is being questioned? A man is dead, leave him to die with his dignity. But as far as I can tell you, knowing that he is not involved, I will can tell you that he is not known to the Police like that. Yes, he has brothers who are known to the police, but not him, alright?”

Reporter

“For the Sutherland murders, do you all have any suspect, sir? We were told that Police had picked up several individuals?”

ACP Chester Williams

“We are looking for some people of interest who we believe may be able to assist the investigation. We have not been able to come across those persons as yet but as soon as we do and the investigation has moved a bit further we will we will brief the media as to where we are.”
