Dillon Grinage

While families celebrated the holidays, others grieved as criminals took over the streets. In Ladyville, Belize District, twenty-five year old Dillon Grinage was executed at a local food stall by a lone gunman. Grinage is the last murder victim for 2016. Just before 2016 came to an end, there was a murder in Rural Belize City. Twenty-five year old Dillon Grinage was socializing here at this establishment at the junction of the Phillip Goldson Highway and the Maskall Circuit. According to the family, the handyman around the village was shot multiple times to the head and body by a gunman who came from behind the old gas station structure and opened fire on Grinage. Deidra says she heard of her brother’s execution from a cousin.

“I was in San Pedro with my other brother, who is a police officer so I was just visiting when I got the call from my cousin who heard that my brother got shot. She wanted me to inform my mom. So I called my mom and she didn’t know cause she was getting ready to go to church. So when I did tell my mom she was in shock, she got off the phone and went out there. Afterwards, I wasn’t hearing anything and I thought that she was shot. I called my mom again and she said no, my brother passed away on his way to the hospital.”

ACP Edward Broaster, Regional Commander, Rural Eastern Division

“When police arrived at the scene, they saw a male person with gunshot wounds to his body and they tried to rush him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Our investigation revealed that the deceased Dillon Grinage was sitting with another male person when the lone gunman came from another direction and fired several shots at them, where they were seated at a food shop.”

Grinage was shot up to six times to the head and upper body. A manhunt in the immediate aftermath of the killing led to the detention of the suspect on Monday—a resident of Sandhill, who police say was no stranger to the law.

“We are doing some follow up and more than likely he will be charged today for murder.”

“Sir, are you able to tell us what intelligence led you all or at least can you give us an overview of what led you to this person?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“The evidence that we have gathered so far led us to that individual.”

Reporter

“Are you able to say…at this time is your investigation leading or showing what caused the victim to be targeted?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“Apparently, they had an argument earlier in the day.”

…that motive is what Deidra Grinage says they have heard as well and if it is true, the person is well known to the family. It is even more hurtful because Dillon was to celebrate his twenty-sixth birthday on the nineteenth of January.

“We honestly do not know what happened. We are only hearing little things. No one wants to talk who is out there and it is understandable that maybe they fear their lives…it’s understandable. This is a very small village and whatever happens here, you hear. So somebody had to see something; somebody had to hear something. Yes, a lot of people is very distraught, very upset and very sad. The entire Grinage family is really taken aback by what happened.”

Police are looking for a second person in connection with his murder. Duane Moody for News Five.
