Welcoming the Newest Belizeans in 2017

There’s another reason to celebrate. The first baby to be born this year is baby Kelsey Garnett. She was delivered at twelve on Sunday morning weighing seven pounds six ounces. She was born at the K.H.M.H. to a sixteen year old mother. As is customary, the parents were gifted with baby supplies from the San Cas Group of Companies. We met the New Year’s Baby today and spoke with a proud aunt.

Quincella Murillo, Sister

“You all live with your mom; your mom is in Belize?”

Quincella Murillo

“Yes. We live with my mom right here in Belize [City].”

Reporter

“So, she has that support network from home?”

Quincella Murillo

“Yes. She got big support from us.”

Reporter

“Now, were you guys expecting to be the first? The Doctors did tell you that it will be January first, but you know sometimes there are days different; so did you expect it would have come on the first?”

Quincella Murillo

“I figured it mi wah be the first because she got pain from nine o’clock dah morning and she bear it, bear it, bear it and until 9 o’clock I bring ah in. And then afterward the pain just start come and when ih gone pahn the delivery table dahexact twelve o’clock the baby come out.”

“What we have done over the past three years is to extend it to districts and the only two areas that have not received a package is Belmopan and PG. So, we continue doing this because we have found that the starter packages that we give to the mommies they are really helpful to them. What we have added this year for the New Year’s baby is that we are giving her a $100.00 gift certificate so that she can pick up basic items that she may need. Being a first time mom we know that it is hard so want to provide her with at least a starter for her and the baby.”

Reporter

“You said Belmopan and PG, why? They didn’t have any newborns?”

Aisha Trapp

“So far we haven’t received the information that they had a baby for the new year. But if they have a baby that is gonna be born this week we will still award them the package and for PG most of the time it is the villages and so we want to get in contact with them. Last year we had to send it on the bus but they did receive it.”

Reporter

“What is the value per parent for what you donated?”

Aisha Trapp

“The entire total is about a thousand dollars with all the packages that we donate; including the gift certificate. The second baby, I want to say even though we weren’t prepared, I want to do this on behalf of San Cas Group, we are going to give them gift certificate a well.”
