David Andrews is Latest Murder Victim in Belize City

On Friday night, a man was shot and killed in the City. David Andrews was standing near the intersections of Seagull and Raccoon streets when two men rode up on a motorcycle and one of them shot and killed him. Neighbors told us that they heard at least six shots fired that night. Today, we spoke with the city’s top cop, Chester Williams who told us that while there is no definitive motive for the shooting, they are prepared for any possible gang-related retaliation:

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“On Friday night, the twenty third, Police responded to information of shots being fired in the area of Seagull and Raccoon Street. Upon responding, they saw one David Andrews suffering from gunshot wounds to the back and chest area. He was transported to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Reporter

“Now, this, we are told that it was two men on a motorbike?”

Chester Williams

ACP Chester Williams

“Yes. The information we have gathered is that two men came on a motorcycle – parked and one of them came off the cycle and approached the deceased and uttered a few words to him and then fired the shots and he got back on the cycle and then he drove off.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he was the intended target, sir?”

ACP Chester Williams

“From all the indications, yes he was. And we are looking for one person who we believe may be able to assist us in that investigation.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is he known to the police – is he involved in any kind of criminal activities or anything that you would know of?”

ACP Chester Williams

“You know I will not go down that road.”

Reporter

“Has a motive been established?”

ACP Chester Williams

“At this time we have not got a definitive motive, so we will not speculate.  It is unfortunate that Mister Andrews was caught. We would have hoped that the outcome would have been different, but thank God no other person was injured in the process.”

Reporter

“Now, sir, retaliation. I know I have seen at least one person post on Facebook that retaliation will be forthcoming. I know that this person is well known to you?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Yes. I saw the post on Facebook and I immediately got to the person who posted it and I spoke to him and let him know that we are not going to tolerate any retaliation. And he assured me that he was angry when he made the post and that he took down the post which I later saw he did. And that they would do their best to work with us and we believe the matter will be solved and we are working toward that.”

Reporter

“So, are you confident that you will be able to suppress any retaliation and there will not be any spiraling of violence as we close the year?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Well, we will continue to do what we normally do in terms of mediation and intervention between the rival groups. At the end of day we want to close the year good. I am happy to say that while other parts of the country have experienced an increase in murder for the year 2016, the southside Belize City is one of the only region that has less murders compared to last year. And we are very close to the margin and we do not want to go above where we were last year and want to be able to continue to hold fort and be able to close off the year as best as we can.”
