Salvation Army’s Helping Hand

Over eight hundred persons this year will receive Christmas hampers courtesy of the Salvation Army. Today, the hefty bags of goodies were handed over to recipients at several locations across the city as well as Hattieville, Georgeville in the Cayo District and Maskall Village in rural Belize District. The Christmas pantry initiative was possible through collaboration from the business community. Commander Joliker Leandre of the Salvation Army spoke to News Five about this year’s success.

“Today was a wonderful day for us to be able to share the Christmas story but in a tangible way to show God’s love to his people. We had distribution at three different locations at the same time so that made our work easier. One was right here and that is happening now, some people will come this afternoon because of the crowd. But in all, we are going to distribute eight hundred parcels to eight hundred families across Belize. So we have distribution at six different locations; three this morning and then you have Georgeville/San Ignacio, Hattieville and then Maskall. So we are grateful to the business community for the support and even the citizens who contribute whatever they had and so that is what make the Christmas possible for us.”

“Sir in terms of choosing the people, how did that happen?”

Major Joliker Leandre

“Generally, we have people on the list who usually come at Christmas. We don’t discriminate against anybody. When the people come, they have the need, we register them. So as many that come, we register them and then we try to meet the demand. Every year we increase the number based on the demand.”
