Belize Bank, Mercy Kitchen Share Christmas with Families in Gungulung

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas for twelve Belize City families who otherwise would have had things a bit harder this time of year.  Thanks to an enduring partnership between the Belize Bank and the Mercy Kitchen, these families, six of them from the Gungulung area, are recipients of food hampers.  Those goodies were distributed this afternoon when employees from the lending institution took to the streets to share in the spirit of the season.  Our cameras were there to capture the moment after which Senior Marketing Officer Denise Godfrey spoke briefly about the initiative.

“This is the fourth year we have been partnering with the Mercy Kitchen in providing these food hampers to the most needy.  The Mercy Kitchen identified twelve families this year and we are happy to have been able to have provided food hampers for all twelve of them.  It started this morning, the staff volunteered their time to go over to the Mercy Kitchen and pack these boxes and this afternoon we are here delivering them to the families.”

“Was there a selection process in terms of the different communities you guys are visiting or is it only Holy Emmanuel this time around?”

“It’s actually a cross-section of Belize City because we found that the areas most in need were more centralized in Belize City.  With the help of Mrs. Perdomo from the Mercy Kitchen, she helped us to identify these families.  We have six families from the Holy Emmanuel area and then six more scattered across the city.”

“What has the reception been like since this morning?  I know some of these individuals or these families living in abject conditions.  What was the reception seeing as though you guys are coming bearing gifts?”

Denise Godfrey

“Well it was very overwhelming for a lot of them.  They were really excited, especially those with kids.  They were really happy and it really tugs at your heart to see that you are able to do such a nice thing this time of year.”

The other six hampers were distributed across the city this morning.
