Tourism Minister Wants Injunction to Quash Senate Inquiry

Belize Rural South Area Representative, Manuel Heredia Junior, according to the Auditor General’s report, received fifty-two visa foils that were to have been delivered to the Officer in Charge of the Immigration Department in San Pedro.  On Wednesday, Supervisor of Audit Carla Faber testified before the Senate Select Committee that Heredia was not authorized to have signed and received those stickers on behalf of the OIC, San Pedro.  We caught up with Junior Heredia earlier today and asked whether he would be prepared to give evidence in the commission of inquiry should he be called to testify concerning the visa stickers.  He says that an injunction is being filed to put aside the Auditor General’s Special Audit Report on Nationality, Passports and Visas for 2011 to 2013.

“First of all, let me ask you a question.  Do you know me well?  You know the type of person that I am, my integrity, my transparency.  If you know that it’s easy to answer.  That commission [of inquiry], first of all it violated natural justice, right.  Because, if I will accuse you of anything I have to summon you to answer if indeed what I will put out in the public, if it is so, what evidence is there or I should be able to defend myself at least.  And the [long and] short of that is that we are already filing for an injunction again [for it to] be put aside and I am sure that…  Already the Auditor General is having second thoughts about her report.  Did you listen to the last one… I didn’t know this, I didn’t know the other and I am sure that at the next one there will be harder questions put to her that at the end of the day that will be put aside of quashed.”

“Are you prepared should the Senate [Select] Committee ask you to come in?”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“If they call me, I’ve said it openly with the media; particularly Jules asked me that question at the handing over of the two Tourism Police vehicles if I am willing.  I am willing any time to defend my reputation, my integrity and the transparency that I’ve held for eight and a half years and that cannot be questioned at no time.”

Integrity must have loss its meaning for this minister to profess that he has integrity, when he was involved in a land scandal with an American couple land in San Pedro he and his councilor nephew.
