A.G. Reports Progress in Land Compensation Scam

Vanessa Retreage

Outgoing Minister of Lands Vanessa Retreage clears her desk on December thirty-first, not before completing a list of tasks which include apprising the media on the controversial Ron J Limited land transaction in which an agreement was signed to compensate Ron J a million dollars for land in Placencia which the company acquired for six thousand dollars plus.  While it has been reported that government has paid out roughly seventy million dollars in compensation for land it re-acquired over an eight-year period, Retreage says that significant progress has been made in understanding why so much monies were paid out to private citizens.  As for the Vega/Pitts matter which involved compensation to the tune of eight hundred thousand dollars to Andre Vega and Sharon Pitts, she told the media on Tuesday that she is awaiting advice from the Solicitor General on how to proceed with the case.

Vanessa Retreage, Minister of Natural Resources

“Even arriving at the, what you call seventy million, it’s less than that, but arriving at that figure took some doing.  The process for compensation, we had to examine what the policy is.  When do you pay compensation?  Why do you pay compensation?  How is land acquired by the government?  Those things were not specifically written down anywhere.  Certainly, as it relates to compulsory acquisition of land that is by statute.  But as it relates to settlement in cases where, for instance, there’s duplication, there’s not a defined, there was not a defined procedure.  That has changed.  We have now been working on a policy to put in place where we will see the involvement of senior management in the first instance and thereafter the minister and the Ministry of Finance in the second instance.”

“Did you find anybody culpable of any wrongdoing or corruption in those persons, in those players, including the former Minister of Lands?”

Vanessa Retreage

“You mean in relation to the Vega/Pitts file?”

Reporter

“That and the Ron G file.”

Vanessa Retreage

“The Ron G file has gone through, it has led us down another course and I will be making a release on that shortly.  Please appreciate that when I say I have been looking into it, I really have.  And I intend to make a release before I leave in relation to what will be done about certain companies connected to that company that you named.  In relation to the Vega/Pitts file, specific questions were put to the commissioner and the C.E.O.  Based on those answers that file was sent to the Attorney General’s Ministry to the Solicitor General to provide advice to me on that.  He has also been instructed as I informed some of your colleagues late last week.”

I think Mr. Andre Vega and Ms. Sharon Pitts should wait in jail until the Solicitor General decides how to proceed with their case.
