Real Police Say Watch Out For Fake “checkpoints”

But with criminals becoming so crafty, Police warn drivers to be vigilant when travelling on the road.

ASP Juanito Cocom, O.C., Ladyville Police

“The scene was visited, processed where a piece of two by four wood and a board with the marking police check point and an orange cone were retrieved.”

Reporter

“So is there any indication that it was in fact police officers involved or other perpetrators?”

ASP Juanito Cocom

“It was other perpetrators using police uniforms.”

Reporter

“…and that is because it’s been confirmed that there was no official checkpoint at that time.”

ASP Juanito Cocom

“There was no official checkpoint at that time when the incident occurred.”

Duane Moody

“Sir, how can drivers distinguish between whether these checkpoints are actually that of the police or these rogue people? How would they know? How do they differentiate?”

ASP Juanito Cocom

“Well actually in this incident there was only one cone; police never set up a checkpoint with only one cone. And the sign; the sign didn’t appear to be one of ours.”

Reporter

“So there was a sign?”

ASP Juanito Cocom

“Yes there was a sign.”

Duane Moody

“One last comment sir on warning for the public, for drivers, when on the road in terms of these incidents.”

ASP Juanito Cocom

“They should be very vigilant, observant when approaching checkpoints; must see like how I tell it, we work with several cones and our signs are different.”

In a release issued by the Department in the wake of the incidents, the public is advised that every checkpoint manned by the Belize Police Department will display clearly a Police Check Point sign. At least one police officer at the check points will be dressed in the number one uniform, which is khaki shirt and blue trousers and a marked police vehicle will also be present at the checkpoint. According to the police, if any member of the public should come across a police checkpoint that does not meet these requirements, they are advised not to stop and proceed to the nearest police station to report the matter.
