Department of Human Services To Look at Possible Child Neglect

Initially, the mother was detained for questioning and the police were looking for the father, who was brought in to the Belmopan police custody on Thursday. Statements were recorded from the parents, which according to Senior Superintendent Gillett appear consistent. But police have received additional reports and Gillett believes that the Department of Human Services should be called in to determine if there was some form of negligence.

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C., Belmopan Police

“Yes indeed the mother was in our custody. We got useful information from her and the father was brought into our custody; I believe that was yesterday and he is cooperating with us. But it is not to say that we believe all that they have said, it needs a thorough investigation and we are taking our time with it because Baby Janeeka deserves the very best. So we want to ensure the public that we are doing a very intense, a very detail investigation and I believe in the very near future, we will have a response or some closure to this case. But from the least I could say, it appears, based on what we have seen—and I am no expert in this area—but it shows….we will also get the Department of Human Services involved because in our view, there might have been some form of neglect on the part of the parent on the child.”

“If it is indeed conclusively pointing towards that sort of neglect, can charges be brought for that?”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“Yes, there is a charge…I know of one to neglect your child; there is a charge for that but we will be working with the authority which is the Department of Human Services, who are the professionals in that field, and we will move from there. But we are taking our time to do this investigation because it is a comprehensive investigation and we want when the investigation is through that we are able to say this is what happened and this or these are the persons that are responsible for what occurred on that evening.”
