G.S.U. Charged with Manhandling San Ignacio Couple

Shawn Gardener

A couple from San Ignacio is alleging police brutality at the hands of a former GSU officer.  Shawn Gardener and her common-law husband are accusing the policeman of roughing them up while conducting a search on them last weekend.  According to Gardener, the pair was seated next to a young woman near an establishment on Burns Avenue when they were approached by two officers.  They were informed that a search of their persons would be carried out.  At that time the unnamed woman reportedly tossed a small bag containing an unspecified quantity of cannabis away from her.  All three were immediately taken into custody, but not before the officer in question allegedly manhandled the woman and her spouse.  They stopped by our office today to air out the police department.

Shawn Gardener, Alleges Police Brutality

“I get roughed up by a police officers, a GSU, former…because while I was sitting on a bench in San Ignacio—me, my common-law and a female—they had about like four police men who came through a yard. And this police guy came to my common-law and he came to conduct a search. And then while he was doing that search I was sitting down and I managed to stand up and I asked him in a nice way, “Why you keep harassing my common law?” And he said he noh wah hear a F from me. And he started to rail up and he just stone me to the ground. And then he put a handcuff behind my back on the ground. While I was on the ground, he was conducting a search, the other officers and they found a little bit of marijuana and they told us that three of us are going to the station. And I was telling him well I don’t know about that. And he said, well you will see and I think because of that, he kept roughing me up. And I was mad about it. So he took me to the vehicle and I had on a tight long pants—I couldn’t get into the truck –because of that and he punched me and I fell into the vehicle back way. I was handcuffed when he punched me in the face. And I couldn’t get in so he throw me in the back of the pan of the truck and I was railing up with him. But all I want is justice because I don’t think I deserve that from police men.”

“Now what happened in terms of the court procedure? You guys were taken to the magistrate court to be charged. What happened then?”

Shawn Gardener

“Yeah we were taken to the magistrate court to be charged but the young lady owned up to her stuff because it was for her and they set us free because it was for her you know.”

Isani Cayetano

“Now the allegation being brought against this officer is abuse of authority in terms of the fact that he physically manhandled you. Are you seeking any action against this individual?”

Shawn Gardener

“Yes, I am seeking action. I already went and made my report. I don’t know how they don’t do him nothing as yet because the following day, he came back after my common-law. I don’t know what is his problem? We don’t have justice in Belize and it is not fair. The keep talking about women abuse, police abuse and all kind of stuff and nothing has been done.”

I have no firsthand knowledge of how this scene played out but unfortunately nothing will be done to correct the police department’s unprofessional actions and abuse of power until professional supervision and accountability is put into play and maintained. At present the police department is a rudderless ship with clueless captain.
