Nationality Rush Before 2012 Elections Exposed

Tonight there is more hanky-panky to reveal about the putrid state of affairs that was pervasive at the Immigration Department in years past. The Senate Select Committee on the Special Audit on Immigration met in Belmopan on Wednesday looking at some of what took place in the period between 2011 and 2013. Senator Eamon Courtenay grilled the Auditor General Dorothy Bradley and Carla Faber on the process that took place at the Department through which nationalities were given away left, right and centre to persons who did not qualify; in some instances simply by ministerial request. We will come to that exchange later, but now this. News Five has learnt that the processing of questionable grants of nationalities appears to be rampant at the Immigration Department that it became a free for all in who was interested in selling and obtaining.  We have received reports late today that in the months leading up to the March 2012 elections, at least two thousand persons were able to get Belizean nationality in October, November, December 2011 and January 2012, mostly without meeting the requirements. We can also say that among those who got nationality, were hundreds of Guatemalan nationals.  But the lists also include volumes of persons of other nationalities who now also apparently hold Belizean nationality. This is a breaking story which we will continue to follow. Now back to Wednesday’s senate meeting. This is the exchange in the afternoon session between Senator Courtenay and Faber.

Carla Faber, Supervisor of Audit

“These people applied for visa, got the visa; and to be a Belizean citizen, you have to wait five years – they got it within days, months, weeks of their visa applications being approved.”

Eamon Courtenay, P.U.P. Senator

“The persons on page three and four and five, in this Table A, were issued visas, and these persons were to visit Belize?”

Carla Faber

“To visit Belize.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And these persons, subsequent to that, got Belizean nationality?”

Carla Faber

“That’s right.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And – all of the persons on this list?”

Carla Faber

“All of them got nationality, yes. Belizean nationality.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And you are saying to us that they got Belizean nationality less than the time [required] set out in the Immigration Act to qualify for nationality?”

Carla Faber

“That’s right.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And you are also saying that in addition to the nationality, they got passports, each one of them?”

Carla Faber

“True.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And they did not qualify for passports?”

Carla Faber

“They did not qualify for nationality and passports.”

Eamon Courtenay

“And passports, right. Just for my final question on this table, Mister Chairman. How did you make that determination that these individuals did not qualify for nationality and therefore also for passports?”

Carla Faber

“Because we had the visa application forms that showed that they applied for visas, the time they got it, the visa number and everything.”

Eamon Courtenay

“Right. And you are saying that there was not enough time…”

Carla Faber

“…For them to have acquired, qualified for Belizean nationality.”

Corrupted people at immigration. They should jail them all for their corrupt actions. They knew that they were not following the proper protocol, and if they were doing it for a minister, then the minister should be in jail. That’s why some of these people working at immigration have good cars , houses after working for a few years in immigration. The people in the UNCAC should investigate all those holding positions in immigration not only those working in the immigration office in Belmopan but also those at the boarders.
Now I understand why the P S U could not have joined the BNTU in the strike. They are CORRUPT, CORRUPT, CORRUPT.
