Julius Espat to Stay Away from House on Friday; Will Compromise Allow Him In?

Julius Espat

Cayo South Area Representative Julius Espat will not be attending Friday’s Sitting of the House of Representatives.  In fact, he will be keeping a fairly safe distance away from the Assembly Building, as word is that there’s a warrant for his arrest should he set foot on Independence Hill during the meeting.  It’s not to say, however, that he will not be in Belmopan and won’t be following the proceedings closely.  Truthfully, Espat will remain on the sideline anticipating his reinstatement should the Speaker of the House decide to extend an olive branch and lift his suspension.  Following the Chief Justice’s decision on Tuesday to dismiss a claim brought by Espat in the wake of his temporary removal, House Speaker Michael Peyrefitte has gone on record to say that he takes no pleasure in putting Espat on ice.  The choice to invite the firebrand parliamentarian back into the National Assembly now lies solely with Peyrefitte, since the Supreme Court has indicated that it will not interfere in the function of the executive.  Espat, flanked by members of the Cayo South constituency, convened a press conference at midday at his Belmopan office where he brought the media up to speed with the latest developments ahead of Friday’s sitting.

“The Right Honorable Said Musa, along with other advisors from the party told me that it would be best that I don’t go personally to the House because we have also received information from Special Branch and other aspects of the police department that they have an order to arrest me, not even going to the House but even the street that circulates the House.  And so with that said, and my executives also came up with a resolution that they agree with the proposals being made and they agree that I should remain close to the House of Representatives if this happens and that I am permitted back in, that I can just go over and go in.  So, with that said, I am not going to the House of Representatives as I previously stated.  I still believe that I should be there, we believe that I was wronged.  Everybody saw it on the television, we don’t need to be an attorney to be able to analyze that situation but everybody believes that somehow we have to give due process a chance and we have to be civil about it.  So that’s where we are with that.”
