Julius Vs. Sedi On What to be Ashamed Of

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

On Wednesday, when asked to comment on Espat’s situation, Pickstock Area Representative Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington proceeded to upbraid his colleague.  He went on to say that it is a shame that the People’s United Party, instead of reprimanding Espat for his behavior in the House, is actually united in defense of such action.  Today, Espat boldly fired back and did so by soundly criticizing the Foreign Minister and former Attorney General for recent shortcomings that have occurred in Elrington’s respective offices under his watch.

Julius Espat, Area Representative, Cayo South

“I’d like, without fighting with the gentleman, to give him my point of view with that.  Under his tenure as Foreign Minister, we have lost the Sarstoon.  I would be ashamed of that.  Under his tenure as Attorney General, we have a conviction rate of between three to seven percent or close to that.  I would be ashamed of that.  Under his tenure as Attorney General, the prime minister, with all the major cases have totally disregarded his ministry and himself as our legal mind and gone outside of that, even though he is highly paid and his staff is highly paid to do that job for us.  I would be ashamed of that.  I would be ashamed of sitting on the same side of people that have soled passports illegally.  I would be ashamed of what happened to Pastor Lucas and one of your representatives has been singled out as being a part of it.  Last night he even said that I am responsible for the killings that are happening on the ground, he was insinuating that.  How can you say that when your ministry, your constituency and those of your brethrens are the constituencies that have the most problems where these problems are coming from.  I would be ashamed of that. I would be ashamed, speaking economically, the report that just came out and it’s not an independent report.  This is government’s presentation to the bondholders, it is their report and in that report; and I will read some of the headlines so you could just see it.  Belize: An Imperiled Economy.  I would be ashamed of that.  Growth rates have fallen far short of projections made in 2012.  I would be ashamed of that.  There has been a sharp decline in Belize’s economic conditions.  I would be ashamed of that.  Economic growth in Belize has come to a halt.  I would be ashamed of that.  The current account deficit has become dangerously large.  I would be ashamed of that.  Belize’s foreign exchange reserves have declined.  I would be ashamed of that.  And it continues.  I didn’t prepare this report, this came from government.  Maybe they didn’t want us locally to see it.”

But for Friday, the firebrand politician will stay away from the House unless invited back.
