Opposition Files Motion to Discuss Net Vasquez Integrity Commission Appointment

Nestor Vasquez

The appointment of Nestor Vasquez to the Integrity Commission remains a hot button issue for the People’s United Party.  Opposition Senator Eamon Courtenay has raised serious concerns about Vasquez’s selection and is critical of his role as the government appointed accountant on the newly formed working group.  It was disclosed, following a meeting of the Senate last Wednesday, that Vasquez, an established chartered accountant, was no longer a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.  The accuracy of that information has since been challenged by Vasquez in other parts of the media where he presented documents verifying his status with the I.C.A.  That status was updated as recent as Tuesday, which is after his appointment, but Vasquez is still not a practicing member. This calls to question his role on the Integrity Commission.  That question, News Five understands, will be debated at the Sitting of the Senate next Wednesday.  The resolution passed by the Senate on November thirtieth stated that Vasquez’s appointment would take effect on December first, for a period of two years.  On December first, Vasquez was not listed as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants based on a list of names that had been gazetted.  That detail forms the basis of the Opposition’s argument that it was not what the Senate had approved initially.  While the institute had selected Warren Coye for the seat on the Integrity Commission, he was overlooked in favor of Vasquez who presently sits on various boards.
