Healthy Living: How You Can Keep Off the Holiday Pounds

The countdown to Christmas has begun. We know how much splurging takes place around this your time of year – and we’re not talking about splurging on presents – but on all the rich foods and drinks of the season. So before you pour your glass of rumpopo or cut a slice of that black cake, listen up to tonight’s healthy living as we offer some simple tips to keep off those holiday pounds.

Marleni Cuellar, Reporting

The festivities for the season have begun. The Christmas parties, socials, lunches, cocktails…the list of activities go on and on. It’s certainly not a time of year that we want to hear about the word “diet” but come January we also don’t want those extra pounds. That’s why we sought the advice of well known health and fitness instructor, Ed Williams. He says you can reverse those holiday pounds by taking three actions.

Ed Williams

Ed Williams, Health & Fitness Instructor

“Stay focused. You know mainly focus on the reason for the season. Focus on the statistics. The statistics are that the average women will gain three to five pounds over the holidays usually more or less. Of course focusing on your fat loss goals and trying to stay on track. The next is strategizing. You want to come into the holidays with a plan and basically your plan will be first of all to manage hunger. You don’t want to go to an occasion hungry. It’s best to have a protein snack before you do so that you’re in control. Hunger basically puts you out of control.”

Dehydration can also lead to excessive eating and drinking; which is why drinking a lot of water should be part of your strategy as well as getting in that work out.

“Muscles are like sponges. They store glycogen in them and is a ready source of energy in case you need to make a sudden move. A depletion workout actually squeezes out the glycogen out of the muscles so basically like the word says it depletes the muscle. The reason you want to do that is if you know you’re going to splurge. Now when you do a depletion workout, your splurge or whatever you have is used to replenish. The glycogen goes to muscle instead of going to your waist. That’s what we are trying to avoid. Intensive is the word not necessarily longer, longer is not better when it comes to work out. Intensity that’s the word.”

The final tip is to choose wisely. Don’t deprive yourself but moderate.

“Your choices. Of course everyone have their favorites. One of the negative effects of not indulging sufficiently in your favorites is that you lose control. You get what we call cravings. So you want to indulge reasonably in the ones the foods you love. Pick the ones your love; go for the healthier choices of course and where possible load up on protein. Protein gives you that feeling of satisfaction of feeling full as opposed to high calorie foods. The simple choice is to avoid those drinks that are voluminous, like beer, stouts and then the ones that have a sugar based like rum. So what are the best drinks? The ones that you drink a little bit of and you can walk about with one little drink all evening, like maybe vodka, whiskey. Avoid like the plague those mixed drinks, especially when you’re mixing with soda.”

If you have a night of excess then just pick back up the following day. The goal, according to Williams is to start 2017 right.
