Multi-Country Sustainable Development Framework Officially Launched in Belize

Today, the Multi-Country Sustainable Development Framework was officially launched following the signing of the agreement between the Government of Belize and the United Nations. The five-year program links the national growth and sustainable development strategy of Belize to the new UN agenda to create a better world, lessen poverty and better the rule of law globally. Aside from fourteen million dollars annually to the country to fund the various projects, the project allows for government to tap into human resources and expertise available outside of the country. According to Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington and UN Resident Coordinator, Christian Salazar Volkmann, Caribbean counties have similar issues, but the solutions differ.

“We have developed now a program across the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean. There are four priorities and we have launched it officially in Belize, signed with the government. The four priorities are health, healthier life. The second is safer life: access to justice, reduction to violence and crime control. Then it’s about climate change and disaster preparedness; natural environment management. And then finally about poverty reduction, better social protection, better education for the people.”

“It is really to enhance and reinforce the sustainable development goals of the United Nations to help us to realize our potential under the UN plan. And remember we talked about the convergence of the UN Plan, our own national development plan and their function really is to help to supplement us in those areas.”
