Another Questionable Land Deal: Did ex-Lands Minister Buy Back Divided Parcels from Owners?

John Briceño

Is there another land scandal involving disgraced former Minister of Natural Resources Gaspar Vega bubbling below the surface?  News Five has caught wind that shadow P.U.P. Minister of Lands Cordel Hyde is following the paper trails of various questionable land transactions between Vega and constituents in the Orange Walk District.  We understand that Hyde is preparing to raise the issue, including his findings, at the sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday.  This afternoon, we spoke with Leader of the Opposition John Briceño.  He confirmed that his deputy has been digging and has unearthed information that suggests that there was hanky-panky in the acquisition of an expanse of land on the Phillip Goldson Highway involving the Orange Walk North Area Representative during his tenure as Minister of Lands.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“We have been reliably informed of a number of issues that had taken place during his tenure.  As you know, the Honorable Cordel Hyde is our shadow minister for the Ministry of Natural Resources and he has been doing a lot of research and talking to the different people; not only, of course unofficially in the ministry but even people outside of the ministry that have been dealing with land for many years.  They have been addressing some of their frustrations and concerns that they had when we had the former minister in charge of natural resources and what Honorable Cordel Hyde is working on right now, apparently it seems that there is this large parcel of land that was parceled out in small pieces given to different people and those people in return passed it on or sold it, quote on quote, to family members of the former minister.  Now, Honorable Cordel Hyde is telling me that he does not have the entire details and he is working on it and he hopes that very soon he’ll be able to have the details that then he can meet with you and members of the media and our citizens at large to show to them some of the many abuses that took place under the former Minister of Natural Resources.”
