No Cheer, Blue Christmas: Christmas Cheer is Not On for 2016

There are no hams and turkeys to be given away this year, at least not from your local area representatives.  That’s because the annual Christmas Cheer Program, a Yuletide feature where the Barrow administration gifts thousands of Belizean families with poultry, pork and a little spending money, has been suspended.  In the past, government has reached into the public purse, that kitty which was once overflowing with PetroCaribe dollars, to fund the initiative.  That pool now completely dried up, along with the bleak economic condition, makes for a blue, blue Christmas, especially for those who have grown accustomed to the yearly handout.  Earlier today, we reached out to Acting Prime Minister Patrick Faber to inquire about the Christmas Cheer.  His response, via text message, was, “as far as I know it’s not on.” The controversial program has raised the ire of the public on previous occasions, as it is seen as selective gift-giving primarily for supporters of the United Democratic Party. We also understand that to underscore a dried up treasury, directives have been issued that government ministries and departments are to cut back significantly on Christmas goodies this year.
