Another Youth Apprentice Killed

Emmerson Skyers

The murder count continues to climb. In the City, Tillett’s execution was followed with the broad daylight murder of twenty-six year old Emmerson Skyers of Taylors Alley. Skyers was shot to death in the area of Cemetery Road and West Street on Sunday at around one-thirty in the afternoon. He was in front a shop when a gunman in a white vehicle targeted him; four men have since been detained. Skyers is well-known to the police; he was awaiting trial for the armed robbery of First Caribbean Bank back in 2015. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Young men continue to be victims of gun violence in the Old Capital and on Sunday afternoon, twenty-six year old Emmerson Skyers was hit multiple times to the body in a drive-by shooting as he stood near this shop at the corner of West Street and Cemetery Road on south side Belize City. Minutes later, residents would gather before his body was placed inside the pan of a pickup truck and rushed to the hospital. He died on arrival at the K.H.M.H.  Skyers had just recently joined the Youth Apprenticeship Program coordinated by Dianne Finnegan; this is the second member killed in three weeks.

“They wanted an opportunity to work out at the cayes and just get away from the Belize City life because they knew what was happening and they didn’t want any part of it. We tagged them to OCEANA and I have to give thanks to Janelle Chanona for embracing them and seeing their potential. I was left with the responsibility to go get his mom and bring her down to the city because she lives out in Sand Hill, bring her to the hospital. And of course they had already taken him to the morgue so I had to accompany her to the morgue.”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B.

“One thirty-five yesterday, Sunday, police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they saw the lifeless body of Emerson Skyers, a Belizean apprentice of Taylor’s Alley with several gunshot wounds to his body. So far police gathered that Emmerson Skyers was walking on Cemetery Road, almost at the corner of Cemetery Road and West Street when a vehicle coming from the direction of Cemetery Road towards Albert Street, a person from the vehicle fired several shots at him causing the fatal injuries.”

The incident occurred in proximity of a fixed patrol just in front of Taylor’s Alley and police are working to solve the crime. Despite the presence of officers in the area, the gunman still carried out the crime in broad daylight.

“Yes, there is a foot patrol that is almost by the homeless shelter which is almost two or three blocks away from where the actual shooting happened which is a distance apart from the static patrol on that side; it was at a distance where the shooting happened. Based on certain information we are working on what we are gotten from there.”

Skyers was arrested and charged back in 2015 for the July thirty-first armed robbery of First Caribbean Bank. The crime was caught on surveillance camera as the robbers made off with almost fifty-three thousand dollars between eight and nine that morning. That case is still pending before the courts. Police maintain, however, that a motive is unknown.

“Is there any evidence suggesting that his linkage with any criminal operation may have made him a target in the streets?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Not that we know at this moment.”

Reporter

“As far as you all know, was his murder gang-related or gang-motivated?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“As I had mentioned, we cannot establish t this moment what was the motive behind the murder of Emerson Skyers.”
