Why Was Abner Vasquez Killed in Teakettle?

Abner Vasquez

The family of a nineteen-year-old is preparing to bury him this Wednesday in Teakettle Village, in the west. Abner Vasquez, who is a known handyman around his village, was killed sometime between Friday and Saturday. He was beaten to death in the center of the village. The family doesn’t know exactly why he was killed and they say that it is likely no one heard anything since there were a lot of activities in the village that night, including a revival and a football match.  Andrea News Five’s Polanco spoke with those who were closest to him.

Isolita Hewlett, Aunt

“So, when my daughter Shanice Hewlett returned from up the road, she was crying.  I asked her, “Shanice, what happened to you, did you fall? Did you get hurt?” But she was crying more. She said, ‘Ma, deh kill Abner.’ And I tell ah, ‘Cho. No way, man. That can’t happen.’”

But it did. Sometime after seven on Saturday morning a man discovered nineteen year old Abner Vasquez’s body behind this warehouse in Teakettle Village. And that is when his cousin wandered upon the scene – just a few yards away from the highway – while walking through the village. He is described as an easy-going and helpful person around the community – but that didn’t stop someone from killing him. According to Isolita Hewlett, her nephew was beaten to death. His body was found with injuries to the head and face.

Isolita Hewlett

“One of the officers asked me, ‘Do you know this person here, down here?’ And I looked upon him and I said, ‘Yes. That’s my nephew Abner Vasquez.’”

Andrea Polanco

“Now, in terms of injuries, what have you learnt about the way he was killed?”

Isolita Hewlett

Isolita Hewlett

“He was beaten badly. Merciless. They beat him to death. When they lift him up there was a hole in the ground that they stomped or I don’t know what they did but they made a hole in the earth with his face. He was unrecognizable.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you believe he was killed right where his body was found?”

Isolita Hewlett

“I don’t really know because by observing what we saw on the crime scene, from my information and what I know, I think he was running from the persons or whosoever, his attackers. Because his hat and slippers were right there on the ground – a little distance from where he is at the warehouse, behind the warehouse.”

Abner Vasquez was killed sometime between Friday night and early Saturday morning. The last time the family saw him was on Thursday evening. They became worried when he didn’t return home. But up to Friday morning he was still alive. The teen is said to have had some challenges, so he never completed school but he would be around the village running errands and helping out. And the family believes that there were people who wanted him dead.

Isolita Hewlett

“He’s a kid. I would not say like a normal kid. He doesn’t work. He was out of school earlier and he doesn’t work. On the Friday morning, his friends and  a person who lives up the road tell mi that he went and sell bottle and he mek two dollars from his bottle that is on Friday morning.”

Andrea Polanco

“So he was still alive?”

Isolita Hewlett

“Yes. On Friday morning he was still alive. But from that time up to his death nobody saw or heard anything about him.”

Andrea Polanco

Did he have any challenges – a mental problem or any kind of behavioral problems or anything of that sort?”

Isolita Hewlett

“Well, like I tell you earlier, he is not like a normal kid, but he wouldn’t attack anybody to like harm people, yuh know.”

Andrea Polanco

“Was there any kind of problems with someone in the village?”

Isolita Hewlett

“What we understand there were people who really wanted to get rid of him. But for us to know who the person or persons arewe don’t really know that.”

Andrea Polanco

“Why would they want to get rid of him?”

Isolita Hewlett

“It is only Abner who would really know what was happening that time.”

Andrea Polanco

“Now, any particular reason why they would want to kill him?”

Isolita Hewlett

“Hmmm. I don’t really know, miss. I can’t say. I only know that he was in a business with a case business but that is all I know. Only from that I know so I don’t know anything else that could have triggered this murder.”

Ian Caliz

While family members say they don’t know the exact circumstances under which Vasquez was killed, according to Police, on Friday evening he was socializing at a shop in the back of village. That evening he had an argument with someone after which he headed home. But he never made it back. Today, his father Oscar Vasquez and his uncles are preparing his burial site. The family says they are hoping that the killer or killers are caught.

Ian Caliz, Cousin

“To say he was chanced out of his life is like an understatement. Sometimes in life, some people come around us and you don’t realize their importance until they are gone. Somebody took away our angel from us.  Some of us are not what you would call nice or good people. I can’t be classed as one of those- I am trying. Abner was innocent. Cool. You could send him out and tell him buy this and buy that. You could buy me wah cigarette, Abner. Buy me wah ice. Buy me something. Those who are responsible for Abner, if you know something, do yourself a favor and say, let us deal with it legally. Because the rest of it I don’t want to get into because life is good. I would appreciate that the people understand and appreciate his contribution to the community. But, we miss Abner. We already feeling the effects of it. This morning I came, I don’t normally smoke but I wanted a cigarette to smoke and when I looked around and saw that Abner was not around – reality set in. So, I miss my cousin but I am here to do our part, to take care of him and we will bury him civilly. And the rest is up to the law andwhat the law can’t take care of, the good Lord will.”
