F.C.D. gets ready for Chiquibul Forest Initiative and Commonwealth Canopy/Maya 2020

On The Phone: Raphael Manzanero

A few months ago the Government announced plans to fund four institutions, including the Belize Defence Force and Friends for Conservation and Development, to the tune of sixteen million dollars over four years in a project known as the Chiquibul Forest Initiative. More recently, F.C.D.’s executive director Rafael Manzanero was in London to witness the Chiquibul being inducted into the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Initiative and signed an agreement for further assistance to keep activities to protect the Chiquibul active. Manzanero gave us an update on both today.

“That project we are hopeful that the finds can possibly be disbursed within the next two weeks at most. So that has been under the protest of development of the concept and this submission of the proposal and all that so it seems it has been approved and a proposal…be mindful that these are 4 institutions including the B.D.F. and the forestry department, YPP and the FCD for queens in Commonwealth Canopy initiative, we certainly it is one where they would highlight the importance of forest that act under the commonwealth nation which includes Belize. So it basically took us quite a lot of lobbying over the last 2 years and a half in terms of being able to enter the Chiquibul forest for that initiative. Finally it has been now launched couple of days ago, couple of weeks ago ion the UL so that was part of my visit and so now we have another disagreement who would be more of our support system, a group of friends from the UK that we have been nurturing over many years that hopefully they can be able to help us to be able to obtain the final to make them the canopy a successful initiative.”
