Ramon Cervantes Wants To Go After Rival on Land Deals

Earlier this week, former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega went on record to say that he will not be stepping down as area representative for Orange Walk North, after resigning from Cabinet last month.  The former Minister of Agriculture gave up his post amid land scandals involving his son, Andre Vega, and U.D.P. insider, Sharon Pitts.  Those dubious transactions resulted in government paying out almost a million dollars to both persons for land near the Haulover Creek that they never actually owned.  For want of avoiding the gauntlet, Vega handed in his notice on October seventeenth, with immediate effect.  While the erstwhile Minister of Natural Resources hasn’t escaped public scrutiny and both Vega and Pitts have since been ordered to return the monies, there is also a move to bring criminal charges against him.  This morning, political opponent Ramon ‘Monchi’ Cervantes visited with Senior Counsel Said Musa to explore legal options to prosecute Vega.  Cervantes and Musa are both well-known members of the People’s United Party, standard bearer and former Prime Minister, respectively.  So, the most obvious question here is whether political mileage is being sought by bringing criminal charges against Vega.

“I came to see the attorney in reference to my intention to bring criminal charges against Gapi Vega, the former Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for crimes committed against the people of Belize.  I think you know all the scandals under the Prevention of Corruption Act of 2007.”

“And what was discussed in the meeting?”

Ramon ‘Monchi’ Cervantes

“Well everything was preliminary, like I said, I came and everything will be studied.  The case will be studied and you know, we have to figure out the strategies and what evidence is needed and things like that.  I also learned that the People’s United Party is also studying the case, firstly to bring charges of misfeasance through the Attorney General, you know, putting the onus on the Attorney General to bring charges of misfeasance against Gapi Vega also.”

“On what legal basis are you mounting this individual challenge?”

Ramon ‘Monchi’ Cervantes

“That’s why I came to get a legal assessment and the Prevention of Corruption Act provides for what I am seeking which is an indictment for those crimes that have been committed.  Everyone knows that this is, the land scandal has been the biggest robbery and the greatest heist of the people’s resources of all times here in Belize and so we have to seek ways not just to recover the funds that were stolen but also that the people pay for the crime that they have committed because it’s a crime against the people of Belize.”
