Big Move Coming for Operators in Tourist Village; Will It Solve Problems?

In one final piece of news from the cruise industry, meetings have been held with tour operators on plans to move them from the open area in front of Terminal One in the Fort Street Tourism Village to the Memorial Park to wait for possible passengers for their tours. It is a long overdue reorganization to the often crowded and disorganized nature of the business. But operator Yhony Rosado has revived concerns that operators are being cheated out of potential business, especially with shorter hours by giant cruise line Carnival in the Jewel.

Yhony Rosado, Tour Operator

“Apparently, Carnival executives have come down here, and as you can see we look a bit disorganized. But that’s part of business. When you go to market, you can’t really organize everything in Belize. This is how we have created our business for the past twenty years; now you want to correct it and put us at Memorial Park, because Carnival is requesting it? I am saying that B.T.B. is there to protect us, to guide us, to make us more money. At Memorial Park, a lot of tour operators will be disenfranchised, because it will be too far for a guest to see where you are. And I know that they are going to put music, and they are going to put everything, but I asked one question: Carnival come here – they applied to come to Belize from eight until five p.m. Carnival come here from six in the morning, till two p.m. If the ship docks at six o’clock in the morning, an hour after a couple of the tenders will come in and people start to walk downtown – what will they see? What will they see at seven o’clock on Albert Street? What will they see? Nothing but homeless, because Belize City downtown is homeless people at seven o’clock in the morning. Because with the hardworking people – Brodies is not open; Downtown Plaza is not open; the beautiful side is not open yet. So Carnival is messing up; the bad reviews of our country [is] because of the schedule that they have.”

  1. Mike G. says:

The bad reviews result from dealings with tour operators that do not follow the rules. The entire situation is an embarrassment to Belize.
