Did Someone Set Fire That Destroyed Senior Citizen’s First Street Home?
The other fire happened on Friday night around eleven-thirty on First Street, also in Belize City. Sixty-eight year old Maria Ayuso was at home with her grandson when she was awoken by the fire. The elderly woman says that she believes it was arson. While they would normally get electricity from a neighbor, she claimed that that night they didn’t get any electricity because the neighbors were not home. Everything was destroyed. The house and its contents are estimated at sixty thousand dollars. Ayuso told News Five what happened.
Maria Eugenia Ayuso, Fire Victim [Translated]
“When I woke up the house was already engulfed in fire. I was sleeping. This happened around eleven thirty in the night. I was sleeping along with my thirteen year old grandson. I wouldn’t normally have them sleep with me but their dad, my son, was out and he stayed home alone with me. We were woken up by a lot of sounds- as if they were stoning my house- it was very loud and when I got up to look, I saw all the flames covering the windows and doors. The fire was so big. I started to shout for people to call the fire truck. When my neighbours saw the fire, they started to throw water but there wasn’t much that they could do. The fire was so big and I was overwhelmed. I had already forgotten I had my grandson here with me. It was a miracle that I recalled and I woke him up because he was sleeping. I told him to let’s go. I couldn’t take out anything. Everything burned. Only the walls are left. We really need help. We don’t have electricity. We would normally get a little bit of light from my neighbor but that day she wasn’t here so she didn’t turn on her lights, so we were in darkness just sleeping. I don’t know what caused the fire but I can tell you that someone set that fire. Maybe to kill me but they were going to kill an innocent thirteen year old. No, it couldn’t have been a candle or a lamp. Definitely not from me. The fire started here in this first room and it spread over to my room because I had a lot of clothes hung in the room. So, the fire spread rapidly in my room. All those stuff out there were mine, in my room. I just give thanks to God that we got out. Or else we could have died. We were lucky.”
