G.O.B. demands compensation money from Andre Vega, Sharon Pitts

The government is seeking to recover almost a million dollars paid in compensation to Andre Vega, the son of the former DPM and Minister of Natural Resources as well as from attorney Sharon Pitts. Both Vega and Pitts were paid four hundred thousand dollars each as compensation for land that was sold to them when Gaspar Vega was Minister of Natural Resources even though the land was privately owned. The property in question is located near the Haulover Bridge and was sold off to both even though the files at the Ministry showed that the Minister had been advised that it was not available. Pitts’ payments commenced in March 2015 and concluded in September.  Andre’s compensation began with a bulk payment of one hundred thousand dollars in September 2015 and was completed in March of this year.  Andre bought the land from Hilmar Alamilla, his father’s sideman for fifteen thousand dollars. But Alamilla had paid two thousand five hundred dollars while Pitts paid ten thousand  five hundred dollars for the prime property that extended from the highway to the sea. We broke that land scandal back in October.  Gaspar Vega stepped down from Cabinet, but since then more information is coming to light on the millions of dollars being spent by the government in these types of schemes. In fact as much as seventy million dollars have been paid out from government coffers in compensation. The government this afternoon issued a release to say (quote) As a result of the findings, of the investigation into the matter concerning Ms. Sharon Pitts and Mr. Andre Vega, letters were sent to both persons on thirty-first October, 2016 demanding, the repayment to the Government of Belize the sum of four hundred thousand dollars which was paid to each of them. Both Ms. Pitts and Mr. Vega, upon collection of the “compensation” amounts, made certain representations which were breached and, by the terms of the agreement with the Government of Belize, agreed to “indemnify and keep indemnified” the Government “from and against all proceedings, costs, claims, expenses, liabilities whatsoever that may directly or indirectly arise from the breach of the warranties and representations hereinbefore made.” Both Ms. Pitts and Mr. Vega have been given thirty days within which to respond to the demands, failing which, as the demand letters state “we [Government] will assume that the contents of this letter have been received and ignored and, proceed to take any and all action necessary to ensure the full recovery of all moneys to which the Government of Belize is entitled, without further notice to you. Do you really believe we will get our money back? Dream on. Damn crooks!

  2. Stand Up says:

And where’s the public outcry on this issue? Upwards of $7O million. We need legislation that forbids this kinda crap. But corrupt parliamentarians are the ones who have to pass the legislation. Just like what the Teachers did, there must be positive proactive pressure placed on our government to make this kind of foolishness impossible. Until then, it’ll continue after the dust settles. Placencia lot was compensated with a million $. Ridiculous

  3. Marcos says:

Will the government really fight ferociously in court to recover the monies, or will they pretend that they tried but failed in court?

  4. spike says:

Quite a few years ago land taxes were raised substantially, especially for people who owned beach front land. I suspect the reason for this increase was to fund the crooked compensation deals mentioned above. Also, to pay legitimate compensation and court costs to victims of various Lands Department schemes. I haven’t seen it mentioned in the news, but it should be noted that there are crooked land surveyors in Belize who contribute to a whole variety of land title theft schemes.
