Cop accused in Jeon Peebles death released; family wants answers

Twenty-five year old father of one, Jeon Peebles, died in mysterious circumstances nearly a week ago. Peebles was picked up by the cops on Sunday night near a supermarket on Mahogany Street. Twelve hours later, his body was found off the Boom/Hattieville Road with multiple gunshots to the head. On Wednesday, police announced that one of their own was in custody as part of their investigations. But News Five has learned that the detained officer has been released as of today, leaving police at square one as Peebles’s family prepares to lay him to rest this weekend. Peebles’s family dropped by our studio today and his sister, Shantel Thompson, spoke to us about the family’s conviction that police may be reluctant to lay charges against a fellow officer.

“As far as I am aware, the police officer that was in custody is now released from the Police’s hands.”

“Have you been told why?”

Shantel Thompson:

“Because they can’t hold him no longer than the forty-eight hours.”

“Have the Police been keeping in contact with you, in relation to the investigation?”

Shantel Thompson

“Well, not really; I have to call them.”

“What have you been hearing otherwise, since the Police are not really cooperating with you?”

Shantel Thompson

“I have been doing my own investigation, and I have heard that they have full evidence against him; eyewitness ID’d him, well, both the police they have surveillance. I don’t think that the police should be released, because if it was a street figure person that did that crime, they would have been locked up and paying the time for what they did wrong. And I believe they have enough evidence to hold him. He should not be back on the job, working, because that’s not fair. They deserve to be locked up.”

Thompson also noted that more than one officer is believed to have been involved. This afternoon, we spoke to regional commander for Eastern Division (Rural), Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster by telephone. He indicated that police did not have “quite” enough evidence to continue holding the officer. When they gather that evidence, he told us, then police would charge who they had to charge. Peebles’ funeral takes place in Ontario village, Cayo District.
