Mother’s Terrible Tragedy in Seine Bight; Baby Found Dead in Bed

A young mother in the village of Seine Bight, Stann Creek District, suffered a sudden loss over the weekend, after she found her fifteen-month old daughter motionless in her bed on Sunday morning. She had fed her child and put her to sleep on Saturday night. Police are investigating the incident as a sudden death, according to Officer Commanding Independence Southern Formation, Superintendent Reymundo Reyes. A post-mortem examination will hopefully provide some answers to this sad and mysterious death.

On the Phone: Supt. Reymundo Reyes, O.C., Intermediate Southern Formation

“This is a report that was received that Marylee Martha Gomez, twenty-one years old, Belizean domestic of Seine Bight village, she reported that on Saturday, October twenty-ninth, 2016, between the hours of eight p.m. and eight-thirty p.m., she fed her one year and three-month old baby, namely, Marylee Blast, and after she fed her she immediately put her to sleep; this was sometime around ten p.m. It was Sunday morning, the thirtieth of October, 2016 sometime after six a.m. when the mother woke up, that she made checks on the baby and saw that it was not responding, and apparently dead. So as a result the police was called, where police visited the residence of Marylee Gomez, and saw the motionless body of the baby lying on the bed.  No visible sign of injury was observed on the body except some blood coming from the baby’s nose. The body was later transported to Southern Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival. We have made arrangements for a post-mortem examination on the body of the baby, to determine what is the cause of death and from there on, we proceed with the investigation.”

“Okay, so is the mother cooperating with police?”

On the Phone: Supt. Reymundo Reyes

“Yes. A statement has been recorded from the mother as to the baby; apparently, the baby suffered no – or showed no sign of any illness, so we are looking into that and, based on what the post-mortem reveals to us, then we will decide how far we can proceed with the investigation and then send the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.”
